Victoria Hall Disaster Memorial, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear

Memorial to 183 children who died in the Victoria Hall Disaster on the 16th June 1883. They were crushed to death after presents were thrown into a crowd of around 2,000 children at the end of a stage show. There were not enough open exits for the children to escape. After this disaster laws were passed to make sure there were enough outward-opening exits at all places of public entertainment. This memorial and all the funerals were paid for with money raised from a disaster fund that was set up.
