William Darwin, Down House, Downe, Greater London

A photograph from Down House of William Erasmus Darwin 1849, age 10. William Darwin (1839-1914) was Charles Darwin’s eldest son. He was born at Down House in 1839. He went to Cambridge University and then became a banker in Southampton. He believed in university education and championed the establishment of a university college in Southampton in 1902. He married but did not have any children.
