Ruin of St Michaels and All Angels Church, Bowthorpe Hall Rd, Bowthorpe, Norwich
Ruin of St Michaels and All Angels Church, Bowthorpe Hall Rd, Bowthorpe, Norwich NR5 9AA
The ruined chapel is next to the modern Bowthorpe Church and has a long history. The original church was built in the eleventh century. This was later extended but fell into disuse at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In 1635 it was repaired and it was reopened in 1639. By 1789 it was no longer in use and the roof collapsed. It became overgrown with ivy but was rescued when this was cut back in 1978. It now serves as a focal point in the middle of Bowthorpe , standing on a rise opposite the Bowthorpe shopping centre. It is a well loved building with four walls intact and arched windows. It is open to the public at all times. Part of the original foundations can be viewed through glass in the neighbouring Bowthorpe Church. This part can be seen whenever the church is open and this is on most days at some point.
