St Michael & All Angels Church, Church Street, Appleby Magna, Swadlincote, Leicestershire DE12 7BB
This is a grade II* 14th century village church, built in sandstone and with a spire, 17 and 18th century gate piers and C19 retaining wall. The remains of mass dials can still be seen on church south buttresses. There were major changes to the nave, aisles and roof 1829-32: entrances on both north and south aisles were removed so the building is now entered through the west tower; oak box pews remain (the aisle side pews are unusual with backs to the outside wall, originally for the Hall & Rectory servants); the contemporary gallery had bench seats for children from the School, the stone font also installed. The clock, made by E J Dent, was installed 1850. The Chancel area was changed 1872: Victorian choir bench pews remain. The NE chapel, originally dedicated to St Helen, is where members of the Appleby family were buried. Edmund de Appleby & his wife's recumbent tombs c1375 remain. This chapel now contains the Vestry, the organ and a storage area. In 1935 the oil lamps were converted to electricity, the wall brackets remain. The organ, reconditioned and installed 1962, was built by Nicholson and Lord. The stained glass windows were reconfigured during those C19 works. They are a mix of medieval, Georgian & Victorian stained and painted glass - some set in lead, others (unusually) held by putty in metal T-frames. Wall monuments, from 1642 onwards, mostly relate to the Mould and Moore families. Roof lead graffiti is displayed on the south aisle wall, some dated 1850.
