Lowther Castle (west wing and west range), Near Penrith, Lowther - Lake District (NP)
Gothic house designed by Sir Robert Smirke 1806-14. Closure in 1935 and removal of the roof in 1957 led to ruination of the main building's fabric. Historic England grant-aided repairs to the staircase tower. An ambitious programme of restoration and conversion of the surviving buildings and grounds, with funding from the North West Regional Development Agency, enabled the site to open as a visitor attraction in 2012. A phase of repair to the north elevation was carried out in 2014 with grant-aid from Historic England. The west wing and west range are unconsolidated and still at risk.
