National Farmsteads Character Statement

This document provides a brief national overview of Historic England's research into the historic character, significance and issues for change of traditional farmsteads. It supports the National Farmsteads Assessment Framework and the Farmstead and Character Statements for each of England's National Character Areas, currently in development.
The documents use a consistent terminology for describing farmsteads and their building types (as set out in more detail in the National Farm Building Types document).
