2/76 7.9.51 Slyfield Farmhouse, with attached
garden wall (formerly listed
as Slyfield Farm, together with
Slyfield House)
GV I Part of Slyfield manor (q.v.), detached and altered as farmhouse in C18 ; now
house. Probably C15, altered and cased in brick in early C17; altered in C20.
Hand-made brick in Flemish bond with some blue headers and some flint,
cladding internal timber framing; red tile roof. Formerly part of Slyfield Manor;
now L-plan, the ranges joined at the north-west corner. Two storeys; the present
entrance front to the west (altered in C20, and now with six 1st-floor windows)
has a prominent 3-course band with tiled coping, a wide doorway offset right of
centre, under a dentilled hoodmould of ovolo and cavetto moulded brick and tile,
and now furnished with a Tudor-arched door and side windows, and C20 inserted
3-light casement windows on both floors. Roof hipped and swept at the left end,
with a ridge chimney towrds the left and a gable chimney to the right. The
north facade of the other range, with five 1st-floor windows, has early C17
features: the ground floor, which is of flint finished with a deep coping of
moulded brick containing a band of flint squares and coped with tiles, has a
doorway to the 2nd bay (up a modern flight of 5 steps), and 3-light casements
in the other bays, all these openings with brick surrounds and dentilled
hoodmoulds; the 1st floor, which is set back, is of hand-made brick with a
continuous dentilled drip-mould stepped over segmental-headed panels (a), 3-fight
casements (b), and a one-light window (c), in the rhythm a-b-a-c-a-b-b; the
roof is swept over prominent boarded eaves on scrolled brackets; and at the left
end of the 1st floor are coupled banded pilasters with remains of Ionic volutes
(suggesting that the range formerly continued to the left). At the rear both
ranges have double 1st-floor bands, 2-light casements with gauged brick heads,
and eaves on scrolled brackets. Interior: the north wing, which appears to have
been retainers' lodgings, is of 3 timber-framed- bays with a crown-post roof and
probably formerly with an open gallery on the south side: the crown-posts have
arched braces to the collar-purlin; the tie-beams of all 4 frames have lap-joint
trenches in the soffits approx. 1 metre from the south wall, indicating the
position of a former longitudinal partition, with stopped chamfer outside these,
and the wallposts on this side are chamfered at 1st floor with peg-holes just
below (suggesting a former gallery); the frame at the east end has a crown-post
with a moulded base and arch-braces to the collar, and a tie-beam with cavetto
chamfer on both sides and a large mortice in the soffit for a former arch-brace
to the north end; the 2nd and 3rd frames have down-braces to the tie-beams,
and these tie-beams have mortices of former lateral partitions and ceilings; the
frame at the west end has W-bracing. The west range has timber framing
including a double-chamfered post in the centre of the east side, and in the
south bay 2 frames with mortices of former partitions in the soffits, and an
undecorated crown-post roof with W-bracing; both ranges have been altered at
ground floor. The garden wall, attached to the north-west corner, running approx.
40 metres west, is approx. 3 metres high, has brick dentils and ridged coping,
and large square gate piers in the centre (altered). Reference: J.H.Harvey and
