Early C18, coursed rubble with freestone dressings. Two principal elevations,
East and South, the latter facing up St. Margaret's Street. East elevation:
3 storeys and basement, 5 windows sashes, all except ground floor with
glazing bars. All windows have architrave surrounds, those on ground
floor having cambered heads and keystones. Centre window over door similar,
but no keystone. Plain strings at 1st and 2nd floor levels, moulded cornice
and parapet with balusters at intervals directly over windows. Angle
pilasters. Semi-circular-headed centre doorway with keystone and imposts,
plain jambs, fanlight with glazing bars, panelled double doors. Stone
doorcase with entablature and open pediment on semi-Tuscan pilasters rusticated
with square blocks. Steps up to door. Good wrought-iron railings flanking
steps and around basement area. South elevation: 3 storeys and basement,
5 windows, sashes all except ground floor with glazing bars. All windows
have deep roll bolection moulding surrounds. Ground floor windows and
1st floor centre window cambered heads with keystones. 2nd floor windows
moulded sills, 1st floor and ground floor windows plain sills on cut stone
brackets. Moulded strings at 1st and 2nd floor levels, moulded cornice
and balustered parapet. The centre windows are flanked by pilasters in
three Orders forming central feature; ground floor fluted Corinthian,
joined at caps by open segmental pediment with dentils; 1st floor fluted
Ionic, joined by open triangular pediment with dentils; 2nd floor pilasters
have surface panels and rise to cornice. Small paved forecourt completely
enclosed by stone wall having 2 piers with ball caps in acanthus leaf
cuppings and 2 similar half-piers at quoins. In this house was born in
1800 Richard Bethall, who became Lord Westbury and Lord Chancellor. The Three Horseshoes and Nos 1 to 4 (consec) Frome Road form a group with
the Liberal Club, The Baptist Chapel, the Congregational Church and Hall
and Nos 6 to 16 (consec) 19 to 22 (consec), 36, 42 to 49 (consec) and Westbury
