Nos 126 and 128
GV II Hall house, now 2 dwellings. C15 or early C16, altered late C16, C17, C19 and
C20. Timber frame with inserted brick infill, part painted, and addition of red
brick in Flemish bond. Plain tile roofs. 3-bay open-hall house having 2-bay
hall and right-hand bay partitioned off and floored; smoke bay and floor
inserted late C16; chimney built C17; addition at left end and house divided
C19. 2 storeys, 4 bays (the left-hand bay being the addition). Timber frame
exposed in bay 3, comprising wall posts arch-braced to wall plate, mid rail and
central lst-floor stud. Bay 2 has wallpost on left, late C20 door with 2-light
leaded casement on right and 2-light window above rising through eaves under
hipped roof. Bay 3 has C20 half-glazed door (to no.126) to right and 2-light
leaded casement, both under segmental brick arches, with similar window above
rising through eaves under hipped roof. Added bay 1 has rubblestone plinth, a
2-light window on each floor and cogged eaves. Roof hipped on right with
gablet. Large stack of 2 builds, in front roof pitch between bays 3 and 4; end
stack to left. Rear: timber frame exposed in two left-hand bays comprising
large rectangular panels and wall posts arch-braced to wall plate; one small
leaded light to 1st floor, right. Interior of no.128: exposed timber frame,
spine-beam of inserted floor has lambs-tongue-stopped chamfer and stops approxi-
mately 3 metres short of partition wall between nos.128 and 126, indicating
position of former smoke bay; cross-beam at rear has mortices in soffit from
former partition; roof has two crown posts arch-braced to collar and to collar
purlin, posts octagonal in section with cornices below braces and lower down
(the lower part of posts being square in section); coupled rafters with
carpenters marks, halved at apex, with collars halved in, rafters sooted.
Interior of no.126 not inspected, but recorded as having timber frame exposed
including original partition wall between this bay and open hall, and base of
crown post visible (DBRG report). Domestic Buildings Research Group, Report
