STOCKTON CHURCH ROAD TM 39 SE 7/87 Church of St. Michael 5-9-60 - I

Parish church. C12 with C14 and C15 additions and fenestration. Flint, partly rendered over, with limestone dressings; brick porch. Thatched roof over nave and chancel, porch plain tiled. West tower, nave, chancel, south porch, north vestry. C12 round west tower, rendered over. Single-light bell openings with plain chamfered stone surrounds. Sound openings on north and south, round with pierced wooden infill panels. 2-light west window of plastered brick, much repaired, with quatrefoil top light under a semi- circular arch and drip. Castellated brick parapet; lead covered spirelet on tower roof. Elaborate roll-moulded corbel and re-used kneeler supporting gable parapet at south-west corner of nave. Single lancer to west of porch. C16 south porch with diagonal buttresses and superimposed C17 shaped gable; single light east and west windows. Nave fenestration C14 and C15, a 3-light Perpendicular window central in the south wall flanked by staged brick buttresses. Chancel wall of brick and salvaged stone with two restored 2- light Perpendicular windows with a plain priests doorway between. Slim pilaster buttress at east end. Short staged diagonal buttresses to east gable; gable parapet on moulded eaves corbels. 3-light Perpendicular east window. In the north wall between nave and chancel, a panel of C18 brickwork with diaper patterning. C19 vestry on north side of nave with external chimney stack on north gable capped off. Single light east and west windows with cusped heads. Good roof, continuous over nave and chancel, of arch- braced principal rafters, wall posts and ashlar pieces on brattished cornice. C17 communion rails with turned balusters and newels, pendant bosses between balusters. Some C15 poppy-head bench ends. North and south windows contain many fragments of medieval glass including two figures in south side of chancel. Two panels of black-letter text in reveals of north-west window. C14 font, octagonal shaft and bowl on two square steps; the bowl has four winged figures, deeply undercut, alternating with twin ogee-headed panels. C17 font cover with carved frieze and crocketted ribs.
