6/97 Remains of Lead - Smelting Flues approx. 20m north-east of The Smelt House

GV II

The Smelt House is shown on O.S. map as Lower House. Remains of lead smelting flues. Late C19. Roughly coursed limestone rubble with red brick dressings. Substantial remains of round-headed brick flues and retaining wall. Several of the flues are open and one to front is tunnelled back for some considerable distance below ground.Surrounding well-preserved earthworks, including rectangular- shaped pond to north-east, are all associated with former lead smelting complex (q.v. under Former Lead$melting Works). The Smelt House is not included in this list.
