LONG WHATTON WHATTON HOUSE GROUNDS The Bogey Hole

II

Former ice-house, converted to grotto. C18, altered 1885. Earth mound with rockery, over domed round chamber with rendered and whitewashed inner walls. Walls flanking arched entrance on north side are of brick, repointed C20. Blocked hexagonal top vent. Former drain now floored over. Contains painted statue of Chinese or Japanese mythical beast, on a whitewashed square plinth with vermiculated panels. Above inner entrance arch is a painted oriental mask. Continues theme of Chinese garden to north (qv.)
