Terrace of3 houses, c.1725, (contemporary with Barton, Cowley, Lord North, Great College Streets and Smith Square). No.40 : brown brick with red brick dressings, early C19 stuccoed ground floor, tiled roof 3 storeys basement and attic, 3 windows, door to right. Doorcase with panelled architrave, plain rectangular overlight, post World War II flat canopy on brackets. Replaced panelled door. Ground floor 12-pane recessed sashes, 1st floor flush frame 8-pane sashes beneath flat red brick arches, 2nd floor 2-light casements in altered openings. 2 replaced dormer casements behind parapet with coping. Interior plan form largely intact, retaining closet wing to each floor. Original M-plan roof structure with internal lead drain. Closed string stair from basement to 2nd floor, square newels, twisted balusters, plain string, panelled dado and part wall panelling. Stick baluster stair to attic. Panelled passage hall with arched opening to stairwell, box cornicing. Ground floor panelled front, rear and closet wing, rear room with bolection moulded chimney piece, fielded panels above 1st floor rooms largely intact, modillion cornice to front, replaced mantlepiece. Plain 2nd storey, cornice survives to front room, with eared fire surround, remnants of panelling above
No.38: brown brick, rubbed red brick dressings, early C19 stuccoed ground floor, tiled mansard roof 3 storeys basement and attic, 3 windows, door to right. Panelled door beneath plain overlight in panelled architrave, moulded brackets support replaced flat canopy. Recessed horned sashes with glazing bars to all floors. Attic continuous dormer with pair of casements beneath gablet.
No.36: brown brick, red brick dressings, early C19 stuccoed ground floor, tiled mansard roof 3 storeys basement and attic, 3 windows, door to right. 6-panel door, the lower panels flush, beneath plain overlight. Scrolled brackets support flat canopy. Ground floor 8-pane recessed sashes, 1st floor 18-pane recessed sashes, 2nd floor 12 pane flush sashes, all beneath flat red brick arches, 2 dormer windows with flat roofs; Panelling to hall observed from pavement.
