GV II

Central block at St George's Hospital, formerly the Borough Fever Hospital. 1876-82, with mid C20 alterations. By SL Swann. Red brick with ashlar dressings and slate roofs with 2 truncated ridge stacks. Gothic Revival style. Plinth, string courses, coped gables. 2 storeys plus attics; 5 window range. Central tower porch, topped with pyramidal slated spire and crest, has modillion eaves and a single pointed arched window with a smaller opening above it. Below, steps to a pointed arched doorway with polychrome head and door with fanlight. On either side, a pointed arched window and below, a segmental pointed recess containing a shouldered window with panel tracery. Slightly projecting flanking wings have a shouldered stone mullioned cross casement and above, a smaller shouldered window. Below, a larger 2-light pointed arch window with panel tracery. Building vacant at time of survey.
