Church. C13 with possible earlier origins, C15 aisles and south porch, C15
west tower, C19 vestry. Ashlar, coursed rubble and cobbles, brick,
roughcast, slate roofs. West tower, 3-bay aisled nave with south porch,
3-bay chancel with north chapel and vestry. West tower of 3 stages with
chamfered plinth and string courses and pinnacled diagonal buttresses.
Quatrefoil window to first floor. 2-light belfry openings with transoms and
Perpendicular tracery under pointed heads with hood-moulds. Pierced parapet
with 8 diagonally-set crocketed pinnacles. 3-light west window with
brattished transoms and Perpendicular tracery under pointed head with hood-
mould with grotesque stops. Niche above with figure of St Leonard on raised
base under nodding ogee canopy with foliated finial. Nave: two 3-light
windows with C19 tracery in Perpendicular style in hollow-chamfered flat-
headed openings. Pointed south door with continuous hollow-chamfer and
roll-mouldings under hood-mould with human face stops. Stepped brick eaves
cornice, raised coped parapet. South porch: low chamfered plinth and
diagonal buttresses, pointed 4-centred arch to doorway with continuous
mouldings. Hollow-chamfered cornice, battlemented parapet with gable
finial. Quatrefoil opening to west wall. Chancel: 3-light window to west
with Perpendicular tracery in pointed head under hood-mould with human head
stops. 2-light window to centre with Decorated tracery in chamfered square-
headed surround, paired trefoil-headed lancets to east. Elliptical-headed
priest's door with continuous chamfer. 3-light east window with C19 tracery
in Perpendicular style in pointed arch under hood-mould with human head
stops. Raised coped gable with cross finial. Interior: C15 arcades to nave
with octagonal piers, on chamfered bases, and moulded capitals supporting
pointed double chamfered arches. Chancel: west jamb of rear-arch to blocked
lancet window in north wall, C13 trefoil-headed sedilium, and piscina with
roll-moulded pointed head, to south wall. C15 octagonal font on octagonal
pier with moulded cap and hollow-chamfered base. C14 effigy of priest,
formed in an ogee canopy, at west end of nave; monumental brass to Thomas
Tonge, Rector, 1472, at east end of chancel.
