2/38 Church of St John The
30.6.66 Baptist II* Church. Late C13 - early C14 origins including the south aisle, with
extensive rebuilding including C15 (heightening of) tower, late C17 - early
C18 rebuilding of chancel and early - mid C18 rebuilding of nave and C19
alterations and with restorations c1986. Magnesian limestone tower, south of
aisle and plinth with pinkish-red brick nave and chancel, the lower courses
limestone, with ashlar dressings and pantile roof. 3-stage west tower, nave
with 5-bay south aisle and clerestory to south side, single-bay chancel.
Tower: double-chamfered plinth, full-height angle and diagonal buttresses
with offsets; to west end, first stage a 2-light, pointed window with
Perpendicular tracery to head, mostly re-cut, within double-chamfered
surround and under hoodmould; first stage band; slit window to south side;
twin-light traceried Perpendicular bell openings, within double-chamfered
surrounds and under hoodmoulds; stair well to north-west corner. Embattled
parapets and corner pinnacles. Nave. South aisle: buttresses with offsets.
Entrance to first bay, a round-arched opening with chamfered jambs and with
double-chamfered arch, plank door. Within a C20 plank door set into blocked
pointed arcade. Single lancet and 3 pairs of lancets, one with trefoil to
head, all within chamfered surrounds. Clerestory has C18 lancet windows.
North side has three 3-light windows with geometric-type tracery to heads.
Chancel has C20 3-light straight-headed window with moulded brick mullions
and under elliptical arch; to north side a late C20 multi-paned window.
Interior. Triple-chamfered, pointed tower arch on octagonal responds with
moulded capitals with nailhead enrichment and bases, under hoodmould with
head stops. 5-bay south arcade (the westernmost partly blocked); double-
chamfered, pointed arches on octagonal piers with moulded capitals with
nailhead enrichment and bases; central pier has inscription 'hic jacet /
corpus W / alteri Upi / by humanatum / cuius animam absolvet deus'. Double-
chamfered chancel arch on chamfered responds with chamfered capitals. C12
drum font decorated with lozenges filled with chevrons and rosettes.
