6/88 No.4

Cottage, circa 1870 by W Eden Nesfield for Rowland Egerton Warburton. Brick and plaster-panelled oak framing; clay tile roofs. 2 storeys, almost square in plan, small, with small outshut east and 1-storey wing of 1 room, added, west. Full-width gables to east, north and west. Glazed porch added to south contains Nesfield's door with tapered boards, repositioned. Leaded casements of 1, 2 and 4 lights. The north and east gables are timber framed; the west gable has plain plasterwork above a casement, with shaped brick chimney abutting, right. The leaded panes are unusually small. Interior: 2 oak beams; closed stair at north-east corner, with window in outshut. The cottage, which is small and probably built for an Arley estate pensioner, has lost some of Nesfield's detailing. [The British Architect, 12 December 1884.]
