south side of west end in
churchyard of Church of St. Mary
the Virgin. GV II
Group of 4 unidentified chest tombs and one altar tomb, from late
C17 to mid C19. From north to south: 1. Chest tomb, late C17.
Limestone. Flat top, moulded plinth and capping. Ends and sides
(divided into 2) have rectangular fielded panels with low relief
surrounds. Inscriptions obliterated. Partially overgrown at time
of survey (November 1984), south side broken up and half removed.
2. Altar tomb, probably early C19, earliest decipherable
inscription to west, to William Cope, died 1852. Flat top, square
with large double saddlestone cap, plain base. Plain inscription
panels on all sides 3. Chest tomb, early C18. Limestone. Flat
top, moulded plinth and heavy moulded capping. Panelled pilaster
corner piers with diamond end panels. Sides have large oval panels
with carved foliage surrounds. Inscriptions obliterated.
Partially overgrown. 4. Chest tomb, mid C18. Limestone. Flat
top, moulded plinth and capping, indented corners. Ends with
carved cornice and central square fielded panel, and cartouche to
east. Sides have central fielded inscription panels and flanking
side panels of low relief acanthus design. Partially overgrown.
5. Chest tomb, mid C18. Limestone. Flat top, moulded plinth and
capping. Gadrooned l/4 balusters, cartouche to west end, and to
east, with cherub head over. Sides have double moulded large
rectangular panels with eared corners. Partially overgrown, and
piece of capping missing on south side.
