PAINSWICK SLAD LANE SO 80 NE (north east side) 5/309 The Vatch Nos 1, 2 and 3 The Riflemans
- II Large detached house, now in 3 occupations. C17 and C19. Coursed and squared limestone, stone slate roofs, but some tile on back slopes, and concrete tile to Nos 1 and 2 in the long back wing. A building in 3 sections set flush facing the road, plus a deep and narrow wing, back left. To road the extension at left end, with later ridge than remainder, has C20 casements to segmental heads and appears to be Cl9 work; to right a 2-gabled section, built in 2 sections, with a straight joint and with break in roof line; left gable is plain, right, which is coped, is a fall cross-gable repeated at the back. Two storeys and attic; left gable has 3, 2 and 1-light recessed chamfer mullion casements to stopped hoods, the ground floor 3-light having pointed heads to lights, as at Abbey Farm (qv). To right, at junction, a C20 opening and plank door. Right half has two 3-light with pointed heads, below two 2-light recessed chamfer casements, these all to stopped heads, and in the gable a 2-light beneath a small blind oculus in a square panel. Return gable, right is plain. At back some casements with recessed chamfer mullions. Nos 1 and 2, in long back gabled wing has 4 windows; two storeys and attic, with 2 steel sash dormers over four 2-light casements to segmental heads with voussoirs and at ground floor various casements. Two-light casements to end gable, lean-to on inner side. Two small gable stacks to No 3. inside of No 3 includes one good chamfered beam to spade stops; former bressummer fire and stair to left, remains now at first floor. Limewashed early timbers, some principals only part worked, in cross-gable; A-frame. Formerly an inn, and said to have included a rifle-range in Napoleonic times.
