ELVETHAM PARK
Barn and attached out-buildings at Lodge Farm to north west of farmhouse II* C17, C18, C19. Large tall barn of 7 bays with aisles, a projecting porch in
the centre of the south-east side, the 2 north-east bays having been converted
to a dwelling in mid C19. The timber-framed structure supports a steeply-sloping
roof, the main truss having a high collar, the purlin below that level being
supported by a vertical resting on the tie-beam, which is itself at a high level.
Each massive vertical has straight braces to tie-beam and purlin, and at the
centre point there is a horizontal which crosses to the wall plate and supports
at mid-point a further vertical to the lowest purlin. The vertical rests on
a cill on a low brick wall which reaches outwards to the external wall. The
aisle wall is of red brickwork, English bond, with a high plinth; it also flanks
the south porch. Roofing is in red tile with hipped ends, except for a small
gable at the ridge, boarded on the outside at the top of the first truss from
each end. The 2 north-east bays are separated from the barn by a brick party
wall built into the truss, the dwelling beyond, with inserted floors, having
3 small gabled dormers and a larger window set in the roof, 2 chimney stacks,
and domestic openings in the brick walling. Casements and porch part derelict.
Beyond the south-west end of the barn a narrower 6-bay framed structure (l e
18) extends; the truss has a collar supporting the upper purlin, and a low
tie-beam (braced to the verticals) supporting verticals beneath a second line
of purlins. Red tile roof, joined with the beam (with valleys) at one end,
hipped at the other, the walling being boarded. On the south-east side, south
of the entrance, another extension, almost square in plan, has been made, with
a red tile roof, hipped on the south-east end; boarded walling. To the north
of the entrance, a narrower, lower block of 10 bays, extends at right angles.
It is timber-framed with a low tie beam truss, with diagonal struts above.
Its north-east side is a red brick wall, continued round the south-east end,
and beyond to form an enclosure to the barn complex. The inner side has boarded
and open sections. Red tile roof, hipped at the north-east end. Listing NGR: SU7801256273
