SU 72 SW FROXFIELD BYDEAN FARM 9/18 Trees Cottage 23/01/86 II*

House. Mid C14, late C16, C17; later alterations, particularly mid- late C20. Coursed flint with brick dressings; some timber framing with brick infill; C20 walling of painted brick. Plain tile roof. Two bays of C14 base-cruck/aisled hall survive, originally extending further in each direction, the left end replaced by late C16/early C17 service bay; floors and fireplaces inserted late C16/early C17. Now one storey and attic, 3 bays; windows mostly C20 small-pane wooden casements. Three 3-light windows with C20 board door between those on right. 2 pent-roofed dormers, of 3 and 2 lights, to left bays. Roof half-hipped with large stack forward of ridge in line with door; end stack on left. C20 single-storey bay on left and lean-to on right not of special interest. Rear: central bay has glazed door with probably C18 window with stanchions and iron casement with saddle bars and decorative catch on its left; section of timber framing above, heightened C20 and having 4-light window and pent-roof. A window to each outer bay, and 2-light dormer on left. Right return: ends of purlin exposed. Interior: C14 timbers are of large scantling and most are chamfered. 3 trusses survive, the outer trusses having jowelled wall posts with long arch braces to steeply-cambered tie-beam, the central truss having base cruck arch- braced to similar tie-beam and decorative central boss. Tie-beams support short crown posts with moulded bases and arch braces to collars and collar purlin. Collared rafters; curved wind-braces. Roof timbers are sooted. Chamfered arcade plates and secondary plates/cornices. The left-hand truss has infill framing including posts, arch-braces, ties from arcade posts to wall posts, and head of central chamfered, pointed-arched, doorway (part removed). Central bay has probably late C16 floor, the spine-beam and joists chamfered with stepped cyma stops; and large stone fireplace with timber bressumer, chamfered jambs, and brick lining with niche and former bread oven. Right bay has inserted floor with similar spine- beam and probably early C17 fireplace with chamfered stone quoins and brick 4-centred arch. Left bay has late C16/early C17 joists, the chamfers indicating position of former partition walls between central longitudinal corridor and flanking service rooms.

FROXFIELD BYDEAN FARM SU 72 NW 9/18 Trees Cottage 23/01/86 II House. C14, C16, C17 and C20. Walls of coursed flint with brick dressings, small area of bricknogged framing, and C20 walling of painted brickwork. Tile roof of uneven form, with ½ hips, and sloping roofs to the dormers. 1 storey and attic, irregular fenestration. Casements. Plain doorways. The interior shows the massive framing of a 2-bay medieval hall, with arch bracing, king posts, a finely- carved boss to the central tie-beam, and a Gothic frame (part missing) to a doorway. A fireplace and upper floor were inserted in the C16, with massive floor joists, a wide fireplace with a chamfered bressummer on stone jambs, backing onto a 4-centred brick Tudor arched fireplace of lesser span. Further timber framing of the C17 indicate extension of that period.
