6/31 Little Churchill Farmhouse - (formerly listed as Churchill 11.11.52 Farmhouse) - II Farmhouse. C17 or earlier. Cob, stone plinth, rendered, with gabled-end thatched roof. Originally a 3-room, through-passage house plan with central rear wing under hipped thatched roof, outshuts under catslide roofs either side of wing, and a shallow slate-roofed outskirt at foot of wing. Shallow C20 front 2-storey porch. 2 brick end stacks (that to the left with bake-oven bulge), and another brick stack at rear of hall, at junction of house with wing. 2 storeys. Front: formerly a 3-window range before erection of porch. lst-floor windows, sashes, without horns, 3-pane sash above, 6-pane below; ground-floor sash window to either side of porch, each sash with 6 panes; the rest C20 metal casements. Outshut with 2-light C20 casement window at end, and, to one side, a small triangular-headed window lighting a tiny chamber at the head of the present flight of stairs, possibly marking the site of a former newel. Interior: through passage; front door with 4 fielded panels above, 2 plain panels below; rear opposing doors now blocked beneath C19 staircase. Left-hand room is now the kitchen, presumably the result of a C17 reorganisation. One large chamfered beam with hollow step stops. To the right of former end fireplace, an C18 staircase with original treads and risers, lit by a small one-light window with oak frame and metal glazing bar. Central chamber (over hall) : floor level 1 metre higher than rooms to either side. Roof: 6 bays, principals, morticed and side-pegged at apex and into collars. All timbers are clean. A C17, 3-light timber window, probably re-used from the house, survives in adjacent barn, mullions and jambs with ovolo mouldings; iron bar to each light and oak shutters perhaps contemporary.
