Details

BRADNINCH FORE STREET (east side), SS 90 NE Bradninch 11/17 No. 1 (The Castle Hotel) - GV II Public House. About 1835 with late-C19 alterations. Stuccoed, under slate hipped roof. left-hand stack with brick shaft. 3 storeys. Front: Symmetrical 3-window range, under slightly overhanging eaves, and with stone quoins. Hornless sash windows to 1st and 2nd floors; formerly 6 panes per sash, but now only 2. Central portico of circa 1835 with 2 debased Tuscan columns with pilasters, supporting moulded canopy; round-headed doorway with panelled reveals. The windows received their architraves in the late-C19 (or early C20): plain to 2nd floor, but shouldered to first and ground floors, with capitals and keystones; the ground-floor sashes (of 1835) were removed and replaced by tripartite windows, with 4 little top lights, and now with one pane to each main light. The Castle Hotel makes a significant contribution to the townscape at the top of Fore Street.
