BOWES THE STREET NY 9913 (South side, off) 33/31 Headstone to William Shaw, 3.0 metres north of Church of St. Giles II Large headstone. 1850 to William Shaw. Sandstone.

Headstone with raised moulded edge and 4-centred top. Inscribed: In memory of William Shaw who died January 10th 1850 Aged 67 years.

Dickens based the character of Wackford Squeers on William Shaw, principal of the Bowes Academy. See entry for Dotheboys Hall (Item 19/34 and 33/34).

Listed for historical interest.
