House. Late C16, altered in early CL9. Timber framed, weatherboarded, partly
plastered with exposed framing, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 3 bays
facing SW with C19 central stack. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 3 early C19 sashes
of 12 lights, with crown glass. First floor, 3 early C19 sashes of 3+6 lights,
with crown glass. Off-centre early C19 6-panel door, the bottom panels flush,
the middle panels fielded, the top panels glazed, damaged by sand-blasting;
moulded flat canopy on profiled brackets. The front elevation, right return,
and right half of the rear elevation are weatherboarded. The remaining part of
the rear elevation is plastered up to first-floor level, and above has exposed
original framing, with serpentine bracing trenched into the studs. The rear
elevation has on the first floor one early C19 sash of 16 lights with crown
glass. Chamfered axial beams, one with empty mortices for soffit tenons with
diminished haunches, the joists raised and plastered to the soffits. 2 C19
hearths back to back. Internal studded partitions removed. Jowled posts. In
right end wall, curved tension braces trenched to the inside of the studding.
queen strut roof with clasped purlins, unceiled. A mutilated ogee doorhead at
the left end appears to be a C20 introduction. In origin this may be a service
wing of the adjacent house, no. 1 Albert Place (item 9/19, q.v.), but it has
been a separate house since the early C19.
