TL 496 080 MAGDALEN LAVER Wynter's Cottage 4/51 (formerly listed under 13.9.78 Hastingwood Road, Hastingwood) II

Cottage, late C16, extended in C17 and C20. Timber framed, plastered with exposed framing, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 2 bays aligned approx. E-W, the W bay originally open to the roof with an internal timber-framed chimney, the E bay storeyed. One-bay extension to the W, C16/17. Lean-to extension to the E, date uncertain. Parallel range of 2 storeys to the SE, c.1980. Single storey with attics. N elevation, C20 door in tiled gabled porch 3 windows each of 2 leaded casements with arched heads, c.1980, one original window with 2 diamond mullions, glazed and leaded on the inside, c.1980. 2 gabled dormers with casement windows as on ground floor. Roof half-hipped at both ends. Some framing exposed internally. Jowled posts, arched braces from corner posts to wallplates and tiebeams trenched inside studding. Clasped purlin roof. The W bay retains evidence of unglazed windows with 2 diamond mullions opposite each other in N and S walls, a S doorway against the SW corner post, and a N doorway approx. 1 metre from the NW corner post. The W wall was gabled, with an original timber-framed chimney (approx. 3 metres x 1 metre in plan) against its N end, forming a baffle-entry to the S. The roof is not smoke-blackened. A floor was inserted in the early C17, of axial beam with joists of vertical section supported on clamps, and later in the C17 the timber-framed chimney was replaced in brick. In the- C17 a dormer was made in the S pitch of the roof, re-using timber from an unglazed window elsewhere. The E bay has an original floor of lodged joists of elm arranged longitudinally, and retains evidence of unglazed windows with 2 diamond mullions in the lower parts of the N and S walls and above the tiebeam of the E wall. The W extension is built of re-used timber, weathered on both sides, with internal arch bracing similar to the original cottage but set at a shallower angle. A brick chimney with bread oven has been built against the partition. The absence of weathering on the W wall of the original cottage indicates that there was an ancillary building against it from the outset. Originally the road access was from the S, later re-routed to the N. Measured drawings and a detailed report by Mr. J. Walker of the Essex Architectural Research Society are deposited in the NMR.
