Cottage late C17, formerly timber framed now C18 lime washed bricks with thatched roof and plain brick stacks. Three bays, single storey with attic, gable to highway. Three 2 light small-paned horizontal sliding sash windows and panelled front door. INTERIOR: exposed sandstone fireplace wall, cruck trusses, oak wallplates with mortices and trenail holes, bevelled beams and heavy floor joists, a sleeping loft with simple ladder access, bevelled purlins and early rafters. HISTORY: The building is reputed to be the birthplace of John Middleton, The 'Childe of Hale,' who was said to have grown overnight into a giant of nine feet, three inches in height.
