Country house, remains of larger house. Early C18, part
demolished and altered 1821 for Seymours, Dukes of Somerset.
Rendered limestone, tiled hipped roof, brick stacks with moulded
cappings. The present house is the west wing of a larger house
formerly on three sides of a south-facing courtyard, 1820s rear
parallel range and service wing. Two-storey and attic, 8-window.
C17-style C19 stone porch with cross windows, semi-circular headed
doorway and open pediment with Seymour arms, three 24-pane sashes
to right and left, plus a blind bay to left, all with moulded
architraves and pediments with carved animals or busts. First
floor has eight C19 twelve-pane sashes with moulded architraves and
cornices. Modillioned cornice to balustraded parapet, six
pedimented attic dormers with 12-pane sashes. Left return has C19
French windows to right, flanked by shell-headed niches with
statues of Autumn and Winter, 2-storey canted bay with 12-pane
sashes and French windows to left, two pedimented dormers to attic.
Rear early C19 range has 12-pane sashes and large later C19 five-
light mullioned and transomed window lighting stairs, four
pedimented dormers as before. Services and estate offices,
formerly servants hall in wing projecting to left; 12-pane sashes
to garden front and 2-light mullioned casements to rear courtyard.
Right return of main range has attached C20 two-storey extension,
not of special interest, 2-light mullioned casements to gable end
of Cl9 range.
Interior has entrance hall with late C19 open well stairs in C17
style with turned balusters to closed string. Joinery includes
good 8-panelled doors, and 6-panelled doors in moulded eared
architraves, C18 range has reception rooms with late C18
fireplaces, window shutters.
The large Seymour house illustrated in Vitruvius Britannicus Vol
II, much reduced in size in 1821, and continues to be occupied by
the same family. Set in planted parkland.
