CLAPHAM-CUM-NEWBY CHURCH AVENUE (east side) Servants' tunnels to Ingleborough Hall and gateway

GV II

Former access tunnels for servants to Ingleborough Hall (qv) and gateway. Early C19. Tunnels: rubble with ashlar dressings. Left-hand tunnel dated 1833 gave access to former stables; round arch with rock-faced voussoirs, stringcourse and parapet with engaged pilasters. Tunnel is c30 metres long beyond which is a second tunnel c 35 metres long with rubble faces, linked by a sunken drive c 12 metres long. Right-hand tunnel gave access to service wing of Ingleborough Hall: blocked segmental arch with stringcourse at impost level and projecting keystone, string- course to parapet. Similar design to entrance at service wing. Rubble wall to south c70 metres long to gateway from hall to Church of St James (qv). Ashlar gate- way has round arch, rock-faced voussoirs, impost band and side pilasters. String- course to base of cornice. Wrought iron gates.
