Family chapel and vault. c 1875. For the Butterfield family, of Cliffe Cattle (q.v.)
Ashlar sandstone. Miniature single-cell chapel raised on vault built into bank and entered
from rear. In Gothic Revival style. Chamfered plinth; corner buttresses with granite
colonnettes and goblets. Copper-plated wooden double doors with openwork lights set in
square-treated opening beneath carved heraldic device with motto and inscription
'BUTTERFIELD FAMILY OF CLIFF CASTLE' crocketted niche and ashlar gable copings with
apex cross. A square column rises from centre of ridge and has figurine beneath canopy on
each side; pyramidal apex raised on colonnette.
Rear: traceried ashlar vault doors under moulded arch; plain plate tracery 3 light window above. Returns" traceried parapet on corbel table interrupted by a cusped triangular light
set beneath a pointed arch an half hipped dormer. Ashlar roof with scale patterning.
Interior: chapel has wooden wall plaque with names for those interred, damaged stained glass
window. The monument is set within an iron railed enclosure.
