SX 36 NW CALLINGTON

7/15 West Haye Farmhouse, outbuildings adjoining on north and gate piers on east GV II

Farmhouse, gate piers to east and outbuildings adjoining. Farmhouse circa C17 extended to rear in mid C19 and early C20. Rubblestone, rendered on front with slate roof with gabled ends. Continued in catslide roof to rear. Brick stack on left-hand gable end. Stone lateral stack with granite quoins and moulded string to rear of main range. Additional brick stack to rear of main range. Single depth plan extended to rear by addition of dairy on west. Probably 3 room and through passage plan with entrance possibly originally to the right of centre with a service room on the right, the hall in the centre, served by the lateral stack and parlour beyond the hall on the left. 2 storeys, regular 3 window front. Ground floor with 3 C20 3- light windows. Wide, early C20 partly glazed door between first and second window. Slate hood and remains of lattice work porch. Blocked opening between second and third window, overgrown with foilage. Above 3 C20 2 light windows. Interior: ground floor with partly blocked fireplace served by rear lateral stack, and blocked. fireplace on left-hand gable end. In outshut, cloam oven projection to rear lateral stack. Evidence of door opening to right (north west) of fireplace, in line with blocked opening on front. Staircase, circa early C19 with square cut balusters and slightly moulded rail. Turned newel. On first floor, blocked window opening to rear (blocked by outshut). Long chamfered timber lintel with pyramid stops. Roof timbers almost complete. Comprising 7 heavy principals dying into side of wall plate. Side pegged collars, also heavy, with slight chamfer. Trenched purlins. Adjoining on right-hand gable end (north) set slightly back, bank barn, circa early C19 extended on right in mid C19. Rubblestone with slate roof continued in corrugated iron at slightly differing pitch. Gable ends. 2 storeys on east front. Left-hand part with segmented brick arch on left and door beneath granite lintel to right. Plank door above. To right, range with large granite quoins and timber plank doors to ground and first floor. Lean-to garage on right-hand gable end. Gate piers circa mid C19 to east of house. Granite, square in plan with ball finials. Site slopes down to south. Barton Farm to Haye Estate. Hayes held estate from at least the 14th Century. Sheila Lightbody - The Book of Callington 1982.
