ALTARNUN ALTARNUN Altarnun Methodist Chapel

GV II

Wesleyan chapel. 1859 (datestone). Snecked local slatestone with granite dressings and moulded plinth. Slate hung with rag slates on right hand side (liturgical south). Slate roof with gable ends. Plan: Overall rectangular plan with pair of entrances in front, liturgical west end. Exterior: Symmetrical gabled front, the central bay set forward and flanked by the two entrance porches, which are also set forward of the main range. The central bay has dressed granite quoins and a moulded plinth with a string at the springing point of the 2-centred arch to the 3-light west window. Above datestone in roundel set in an 8-pointed star. Set slightly back from the central bay, in the angle with the main range are two entrance porches, each with lean-to roofs, the parapet coping to front aligning with the moulded string of the bay. The porches have C19 panelled double doors in dressed granite 4-centred arches. On the outer corners of the porches are low buttresses and the top of the corners are surmounted by tall elongated pinnacles. The left hand side is rendered and the right hung with rag slates each with 3 square headed 3-light windows. Interior: C19 box pews originally with raised central pew at west end (removed). C19 rostrum with shallow niche to rear with text 'Thy word is God'. C19 Gothic organ case. C19 roof, the trusses on granite corbels. C20 partition inserted across nave, dividing church in two.
