NORTH PETHERWIN CLUBWORTHY SX 29 SE 4/99 Outbuilding 3 metres to south west - of Little Clubworthy Farmhouse

GV II

Outbuilding, original purpose uncertain, possibly a smoking chamber. Probably C17 origins. Stone rubble and cob. Rag slate roof with gable ends. Plan: Overall rectangular plan, roughly divided into 3 sections and partly floored. The entrance leads directly into the central room with a large putative smoking chamber to right and a partly floored section to left with circa C17 chamfered floor joists supporting the first floor. Exterior: Long low building directly to south-west of Little Clubworthy Farmhouse (qv). C20 lean to outshut on left and chamfered and stopped granite C17 doorframe near centre. C18 or C19 lean-to outshut to rear right, of stone rubble and cob with rag slate roof. Several of the openings on the front and rear elevations have been blocked in the C18 and C19 and the wall to rear right of the putative smoking chamber has been rebuilt, probably in the C19. The right hand end wall has been refaced with stone rubble on the exterior and the gable end rebuilt with concrete block. Interior: The putative smoking chamber on right is 2 bays deep, the massive timber lintel spanning the width of the building and supported on 2 ashlar jambs. Although the roof truss above has been replaced in the C18 or C19 there is evidence of charred and sooty cob on the inner face of the cob wall, above the lintel. The central section of the outbuilding is partly floored with C19 floor joists and has the remains of a probably C19 stair to the rear, leading up to the first floor to the left. The mortices in the cross wall and cross beam indicate that the earlier flooring above had rectangular section, probably post 1700 floor joists. Heavy circa C17 floor joists supporting floor above left hand section. The internal face of the cob walls appears to be quite sooty in parts throughout the building. Roof structure: Above left hand section circa C17 principals morticed at apices with later roof structure of C18 and C19 above centre and putative smoking chamber to right.
