4/58 The Manor House and house attached

GV II House, now in multiple accommodation, with house attached to left in separate
accommodation. C17 origin, enlarged C18; rear range of early C19 with additions and
alterations of later C19 and C20. Rendered stone rubble. Slurried and bitumenised
slate roof with ridge tiles; gable ends, with gable end stack to right with brick
shaft and axial stack with truncated rubble shaft at the original right gable end.
The house attached to left is in painted rubble; slurried scantle slate roof with
ridge tiles and gable ends ; gable end stacks, with C20 brick shaft to left,
truncated shaft to right.
Plan: The original house was of 2-room plan with central passage, each room heated
from a gable end stack. Large one-room plan addition of C18 at the right end, heated
from a gable end stack at the right end, and at about the same time, a one-room plan
unheated addition was made to front left. Probably early-mid C19, a parellel rear
range was added to left with canted bay at the right end, of 2-room plan with the
room to right heated from a rear lateral stack. Rear addition behind this now
separate house, Bay View Cottage (q.v.). Circa early C19 a 2-room plan house was
added to the left end, each room heated from a gable end stack.
Exterior: Asymmetrical 2-storey front. There is a 2-storey wing to left with hipped
roof, with C20 window at ground and first floor at the front and the right side.
The original cottage has one bay to front with 2 C20 windows at ground floor, the one
to right originally the entrance doorway, with a plate-glass sash above in a raking
dormer. 2-storey canted porch of late C19 to right, with 4-pane sashes ; outer door
with sidelights, inner C20 half-glazed door. First floor has central 12-pane sash
with C20 sidelights. Bay to end right has plate-glass sash at ground floor and C20
window in raking dormer above. At the right side the C18 gable end is blind. To
right, early C19 2-storey canted bay with flat roof ; ground floor has 20-pane sash
with C20 sidelights, first floor has 12-pane sash with Gothic glazing bars and C20
sidelights. First floor at the left side has C19 16-pane sash. Set back to right a
C20 external stair leading to first floor door. The house attached at the left end
is 2-storey, a symmetrial 2-window front. Ground floor has C20 French windows and
porch. First floor has C19 16-pane sash to left and C20 12-pane light to right.
Interior: The interior has been much altered. At first floor to rear, the room with
the canted bay has a 4-panelled Gothic door to rear. In the house attached to left
there is a winder stair with stick balusters and columnar newels to rear centre.
