5/3 Crake Trees 6.2.68 (tower house)

House, now ruinous, incorporating tower. At least 2 separate builds: Tower probably C14, linked to solar block by single-storey hall; 1st floor added to hall, probably in C16 or C17. Later additions and alterations. Said to have been a residence of the Lancaster family. Coursed, squared rubble with quoins. Roofless. Tower has been reduced and now stands only 2 storeys high; walls to hall and solar were 2 storeys high in 1934 (R.C.H.M. Westmorland Inventory) but have been somewhat reduced since then. Windows of various dates remain, including one with a C14 trefoiled ogee head in the south face of the tower. Barrel vault to towers ground floor survives intact; stone newel stair and a number of fireplaces remain in situ.
