Nunnington Mill
II
Mill, now granary. Mid-late C18, enlarged and partly rebuilt in C19.
Dressed limestone with tooled quoins; rebuilding in rusticated stone.
Renewed pantile roof with brick stack. Bridge-type mill. 4-storey, 5-bay
front. Wheel arch of rusticated voussoirs at right end of ground floor.
Windows are all top-opening lights with heavy lintels, those on ground floor
renewed. Coped gables and shaped kneelers. Left end stack. Rear: largely
masked by later cart-shed. Right end bay of mill has stable door on ground
and first floors with weatherboard lucam to second and third floors.
Interior: machinery on ground floor now boarded up. Under-shot hybrid wheel
with cast-iron rim and centre, and wooden spokes and paddles survives,
together with pit-wheel and wallower. On stone floor original
3 pairs of under-driven stones partly dismantled, though one pair retains
its furniture. Iron crown wheel with wooden teeth, bevel gear and layshaft
with pulleys still in posiiton. Mill was in use until c1960. Cart-shed at
rear not of special interest.
