Details

CHULMLEIGH LEIGH ROAD, Chulmleigh SS 6814 - 6914 7/81 The White Hart GV II Former inn, now private house. Probably C17 core, extensively remodelled in early C19. Painted roughcast rendered stone rubble and probably some cob. Slate roof with gable ends. Brick stack at left end, and large lateral stack, with brick shaft to rear right end enclosed by rear wing. Small brick stack inserted in early C20 to front right end. Plan: Essentially a 2 room and through-passage plan, the left-hand room at one time axially partitioned to form unheated rear cellar, the larger right-hand room , heated by the rear lateral stack, was much altered in C19 by the insertion of a spine partition creating a long narrow room (formerly the bar) with raised floor level to front and 2 smaller rooms to rear, that nearest to the through-passage formerly the serving area. C19 dog-leg staircase to rear of through-passage. Also added in the C19 was the 2-storey gable-ended kitchen wing of one-room plan sharing the rear lateral stack and creating a 1-shaped plan. The upper storey of the main range extends over the carriage-way through to the rear courtyard at the right end. Attached at right angles to the rear left end of the main range is the stable block, the upper storey reached by an external staircase and originally used as a club room. Exterior: 2 storeys. 4 window range. C19 fenestration intact, all 3 light casements 8 panes per light except at right end which has 2 light casement, 6 panes per light over large double plank doors to carriage-way entrance. Pilastered doorcase with carved consoles supporting shallow hood, 2 panelled base to door, upper part glazed. Interior: Largely unspoilt late C19/early C20 interior including fireplaces, joinery, dado panelling and staircase. Tiled floor to through-passage. Flag floor to rear right-hand room. Stable block intact with 6 stalls. Probably C19 roof structure.
