SW 73 SE MYLOR 5/200 Trevissome House II
Country house. Circa early C19 and extended in at least 2 phases later in the C19.
Stuccoed walls. flipped scantle slate roofs with moulded plasterwork under wide eaves
soffits. Brick chimneys over cross walls.
Plan originally of 3 reception rooms in line to garden front with passage behind
leading from side entrance at right (east), to stair hall; with service room beyond,
to rear of left-hand room. Further reception room to front left (west) is probably
later addition but in the same style and with service room behind and adjoining later
C19 kitchen with pyramidal roof. In the late C19/early C20, U-shaped service range
added to rear of original house, enclosing small courtyard. It has been suggested
that parts of an earlier house are incorporated in the west side of this. Large C20
extension adjoining to west.
2 storeys. 2:1:1:1 bay south garden front originally probably symmetrical with 2
window left-hand bays in same style probably added. Stucco plinth, rusticated quoin
strips, hood string, moulded aprons under most first floor windows, first floor sill
string and bays 1, 2 and 4 with recessed surrounds to windows. Bays 3 and 5 are
broken forward and have 3-light canted bay windows. Fourth bay, originally central,
has round arched window surround to ground floor. All circa late C19/early C20
horned sashes with plate glass. C20 extension on extreme left set back slightly.
East entrance front has original 3 window part, left, and 4-window circa late
C19/early C20 service wing, right. Original part has similar stucco detail to main
front. Entrance to right has round arched doorway with original 6-panel door,
fanlight and panelled reveals. Flanking rusticated pilasters with right-hand one the
lower part of quoin strip and Doric distyle wooden portico in front. Original
hornless sashes with glazing bars removed and plate glass inserted circa late
C19/early C20. Original horned sashes of service wing, right, also with plate glass.
Interior is little altered and retains most of the original carpentry, joinery and
plasterwork. Mahogany 6-panel doors with original architraves to reception area.
Entrance passage and first floor area adjoining stair hall have ceiling bands with
trailing roses. Stair hall has geometric open-well open-string stick baluster stair
with mahogany handrail wreathed over newel. Moulded ceiling band with rosettes,
over. Left-hand reception rooms not inspected. Original middle room has egg and
dart cornice and moulded and carved band. Right-hand room has fine marble chimney
piece with engaged fluted columns, festooned frieze; and dentilled cornice and
ceiling cornice with egg and dart, harvest band, and central rose with concentric
rings of carved acanthus. Doorway between first floor passage and room over entrance
has pilaster jambs and fanlight.
Although with glazing bars removed or sashes replaced, this is a fairly complete
house of its period with some good original detail and whilst being much extended
retains some strong architectural qualities to east and south fronts.
