GV II House. Late C16 or c17, remodelled in early or mid C19. Solid, roughcast walls,
probably of stone. Slated roofs with blue glazed ridge-tiles. 2 rendered
chimneystacks on front slope of roof at left-hand side; a third rendered stack on
ridge, off-centre to right, and a red brick stack on right-hand gable of main
building. A long building, one room deep, with added lean-to along the street
frontage. At right-hand end a 1-window extension, set back and with a lower ridge-
line. 2 storeys. 5-window front. In second bay from the left a 6-panelled door
with moulded door-frame; the 4 lowest panels are flush, the top 2 panels now
glazed. The 2 ground-storey windows at either side of the doorway are 6-paned fixed
wood sashes; the right-hand window in main range is a small 2-light wood casement
with C20 glazing. All the windows in second storey of main range are wood casements
with 2 panes per light; 3 lights, except for a 5-light casement in the third window
from the left. The right corner of the main range is splayed, having a wood
casement window in each storey; 2 lights in ground storey, 3 lights in second
storey, both with 2 panes per light. The extension to right has old plank door with
wrought-iron strap-hinges in ground storey; in second storey is a 2-light wood
casement window with 2 panes per light. The left-hand gable-wall has a small C20
metal-framed window to right. In second storey is a C19 6-paned wood casement
window. Garden front preserves its early or mid C19 appearance virtually unaltered.
Main block is 5 windows wide. Windows are all wood casements, except for French
windows at left-hand end of ground storey; all have small square panes, with the
addition of quarter-panes in the ground storey. Many contain old glass. Main
doorway in centre bay has door with 6 flush panels and cast-iron knocker; narrow
patterned fanlight over. Steeply gabled, open wood porch with long pendant in the
gable; front of gable glazed with small panes. Between the 2 left-hand windows is
an old plank door; above it a pent roof, covered with wood shingles, on shaped wood
brackets. Lower left-hand section has a wood casement window with small panes in
each storey, the ground-storey window having a segmental head. To left of latter is
an old plank door with plain fanlight over.
Interior: the 2 eastern ground-storey rooms have chamfered upper-floor beams and
there is a chamfered half-beam against the west wall of the entrance-passage which
adjoins these 2 rooms on the west. There are likely to be other early features at
present concealed by plaster. At the east end of the roof are 3 C16 or C17 trusses.
These are unblackened and have threaded purlins and ridge; the feet of the
principal rafters are mostly concealed, but just the tip of a jointed cruck is
visible in the eastern truss. The middle truss is closed, having a straight collar
and queen-struts; the other 2 are open trusses, that to the east having a cambered
collar (the western truss no longer has one). To the west of these trusses is a
lower one, the date and function of which are not clear; it is apparent from
weatherings on the stack in the west gable (now within the roof space) that the roof
of the whole western section of the building has been raised.
