Details
SU 73 NW FARRINGDON GOSPORT ROAD (Lower Farringdon) 2/32 The Forge and Little Forge Cottage GV II House, now 2 dwellings. C16, C17, C18. Walls are of painted brickwork in Flemish bond, the south wing having exposed framing in the gable (with herring- bone infill) above flint walls with brick dressings; cement plinth. Tile roof ½-hipped at the north end (with a gablet), is taller above the south side crosswing, and hipped above the north wing. A late medieval timber-framed hall, extended as a timber-frame at each end with a cross wing, reclad in the C18, and with a single-storeyed wing forward of the north side. East front: 2 storeys; 1.2 windows. Casements. Boarded door in a plain frame, with a hipped tiled canopy on posts. Inside, the framework shows the cornerposts of a hall with lower eaves, as well as the extended framework (c17?); a large fireplace was attached to the crosswing and the gable later moved outwards to enclose it. The upper room of the crosswing has a plaster ceiling with decorative motifs. of the C17.
