7/45 Ogbourne Maisey House
II*
House. Late C16-early C17, altered early C18. Banded sarsen and
knapped flint, tiled roof. Two storeys and attics, and cellars
under western third. Five bays. T-plan with central entrance
hall and stone doorcase of 1636, having slender Ionic columns,
entablature and pediment. Doorway arched with acanthus key and
carved abaci, the spandrels facetted and having blank shields. Two
leaf door, and either side 18-pane sashes, early C18 with heavy
glazing bars. Outer bays have 12-pane sashes of mid C18 and
between, to right of entrance, round headed stair window with key
blocks on architrave. Balancing blind window to left. Upper floor
has 3-light stone windows with hollow chamfered mullions, outer
ogee, and label hoods. Above eaves, 3 symmetrical gabled flush
dormers, tile hung, with 3-light timber C17 windows with diamond
leading. Between dormers two similar recessed dormers. Gable
ends have brick stacks, each with 3 diagonal brick shafts. Cellars
to right of entrance have stone mullioned windows.
Interior: Entrance hall has C17 dado panelling. Left drawing room
has good fireplace with Ionic columns, full panelling and a
dentilled cornice. Probably originally a hall converted to a
parlour in the C18. Rear wing is original kitchen with large
gable fireplace, subsequently reduced in size. Attached on south-
west corner, a brick block of C17, containing a C17 stair, possibly
originally timber framed. Roof has butt purlins and tenoned
ridge, with windbraces.
