SO 61 NE MITCHELDEAN ABENHALL 6/155 Church Farm: farm buildings
GV II Farmstead; built as one range mid C19, but parts earlier. Random
rubble stone with larger quoins; slate roofs. Large U-plan, with
one arm extended: nearly all buildings single storey. on left,
5-bay cartshed, first bay walled, with double boarded doors under
cambered stone arch; remainder open, timber lintel on square
piers; parapet gable at front end. Internally king-post trusses
with iron bolts, as most of rest of farmstead. This abuts earlier
barn, 5-bay, central double boarded doors with timber lintel, 5
slit air vents on left in two rows: on right 2, then lean-to
extension of no special interest, covering blocked door and slit
air vent. Internally stone-paved threshing floor, originally with
low wall to bays on left, since demolished. On right loft; end
bay walled off below as harness room and feed store for stable,
with gable door thereto. Barn burnt in mid-late C19, re-roofed
with queen post trusses with iron bolts. Beyond, continuing line,
a passage with doors each end and side, 5-bay stable and single-bay
loose box, 3 original boarded sliding doors to yard: no windows,
light from glass slates in roof (also in cowhouse). Cobbled
causeway along front to yard, extending along front of cowhouse
beyond. Internally cobbled floor and hay rack survives, and water
tank over passage. 5-bay cowhouse at right-angles beyond, with
feed preparation room at each end: that on left has double doors
to rick yard. 2 doors as stables to yard; cast-iron grilles at
low level for ventilation, back and front walls. Internally 2
doors to each end room, feeding passage at head of cattle, with
original trough lined with clay tiles, with timber edgings: timber
rail above and original stone slab stalls: there was never a hay
rack. on right return a 4-bay open-fronted shed with square stone
piers for loose yard cattle, one bay built up. This was later
walled off as a slaughter house. It abuts an earlier 2-storey
building, upper floor used as granary: stone wall completes
enclosure of yard at front. Stone-walled rick-yard lies behind
barn. A fairly complete and little altered set of mid C19 farm
buildings.
