GV II* Church. C12 south door, C14 chancel, C15 south chapel and tower, C16 south
porch and south aisle; chancel, south chapel, south aisle and nave virtually
rebuilt during restoration in 1892 by C Hodgson Fowler. Ashlar, graduated
stone slate and lead roofs. Plan: west tower, 3 bay nave with rebuilt south
aisle and south porch, and chancel with south chapel. West tower: 3 stages.
Plinth, diagonal offset buttresses. South side second stage has small ogee-
arched 1-light window, moulded band. Belfry: 2-light flat headed mullion
and transom openings with arched cusped lights. Eaves band, embattled
parapet, pinnacles to each corner. To west side a large C16 3-light mullion
and transom window with arched lights, very flat 4-centred arch to head.
Below band a clock face. Nave: 3 bays, offset angle buttresses between
bays. North windows are Perpendicular in style with pointed arches. South
aisle: windows are of 3-lights, Perpendicular style with flat heads and
hoodmoulds. Stone coping, gable cross. South porch: offset angle
buttresses with pinnacles, pointed arch doorway, above a gable with cross.
The south doorway was re-sited in C19. C12 doorway with 2 orders of columns
with scalloped capitals. The arch has zigzag and beakhead motifs. Chancel:
north side has 2-light and 3-light Perpendicular style windows with pointed
arches. To south on left is gabled south chapel with 2-light 4-cented arched
window with cusping and hoodmould. To right, set back slightly an extension
with moulded pointed-arched priests doorway. Stone coping, gable cross.
East window: 3 lights, with pointed arch, Perpendicular in style, hoodmould.
Interior: south arcade of 4 bays with octagonal shafts and moulded pointed
arches. Chancel arch similar with short clustered responds. Chancel arcade
of 2 bays with plain moulded pointed arches. Early C12 font, cylindrical in
shape, with rope motif frieze near the top. East window by Kempe c1893.
Remains of an Anglo-Danish cross-shaft with interlace and part of a hogback
tombstone.
