No.28) GV II Shop (now contiguous with shop at No.26) and office on first
floor (26A). C16 altered early C19. Timber-framed, plastered,
peg-tiled roof. 2 storeys. L-shaped plan with large rear
lateral stack, carriageway at E end.
S front elevation, long jetty cased-in in early C19 but jetty
brackets and joists visible. Ground floor, central C19 doorway
with ornate head, door has upper glazing, 2x2 panes, 2 lower
beaded panels, to W, large fixed C19 window with simple
pilasters and thin glazing bars, 6x4 panes. To E of doorway,
C19 sliding sash window with glazing bars, 4x3 panes, moulded
architrave, carriageway bricked to W side, timber-framed to E.
C20 pair of folding doors each side. First floor, 3 sliding
sashes with glazing bars, 4x3 panes, irregular spacing. Roof
shows building break E of centre and behind, C19 red brick
upper section of rear lateral stack visible. Rear, N
elevation: front range had rear projecting block with hipped
roof, stack rises behind, C20 combed pargetting. Projection,
ground floor, C20 panelled door, glazed with shaped head. C20
casement window, first floor, one single light and one 2-light
C20 window, also, C20 2-light window over carriageway.
INTERIOR: ground floor considerably restored, bridging joist
has step-stopped chamfers, lateral stack of C16 thin red
brick, heavy timber lintel, rear timber-framed projection
encloses the stack. Chamfered door frame between units below
echoes roof break. C19 inserted fireplace at E side of older
stack. First floor, brick arch headed chamfered fireplace over
one below. Timber framing heavily restored, roof of wind
braced side purlin form.
