Country house and attached outbuildings, garden wall and
summerhouse. c1755, with alterations to entrance hall and main
stair c1770, and further alterations c1790 and 1820. Built for
the Burton family. Brick, mainly rendered, with ashlar front
and dressings and hipped and gabled slate and pantile roofs. 2
coped ashlar ridge stacks and 2 rendered rear wall stacks. 3
storeys; 5-window range.
Main west front has rusticated ground floor, string course and
dentillated eaves cornice. Five 15-pane sashes with moulded
surrounds, cornices and balustrades. Above, five 6-pane sashes
with moulded surrounds, the central one eared. Central ashlar
portal with 2 Ionic columns, entablature and segmental
pediment. Half-glazed door with shaped lights and overlight,
c1790. On either side, two 15-pane sashes with keystones.
South side has a central 3-storey canted bay window with three
12-pane sashes and above, three 9-pane sashes. Below, 3
round-headed plain sashes. To right, three 18-pane sashes and
above, three smaller 9-pane sashes. Below, a half-glazed door
flanked to right by two 18-pane sashes. To left, 2 tall
12-pane sashes and above, two 6-pane sashes. Below, a single
15-pane sash flanked by single blocked windows.
North side has a bay window with identical fenestration, and a
blank range to its right. To left, a recessed bay with a
Venetian window and above, a Diocletian window. Below, a
flat-roofed addition with a round-arched 2-light casement and
below, a similar flat-headed window.
To left again, a wing with a 12-pane sash to right and above,
two 9-pane sashes.
Beyond, a workshop, painted brick with pantile roof and
external gable stack. 2 storeys; 2-window range of 6-pane
sashes. Below, a 3-light Yorkshire sash flanked to left by a
6-pane sash and to right by a 6-pane window. To its left, a
former cottage, now an outbuilding. Rendered brick with
pantile roof and gable stack. To right, a through-eaves dormer
with a 6-pane sash. Tumbled coped left gable with two 6-pane
sashes.
Rear has to left a rendered flat-roofed addition, 2 storeys,
with two 12-pane sashes on each floor. To its right, a
single-storey building at right angles, brick with hipped
concrete tile roof and single ridge stack. To south, 3
round-arched wooden cross casements. To right again, a short
link building, then a single-storey dairy, brick with canted
pantile roof and canted corners.
INTERIOR; entrance hall and stairwell, c1765, have enriched
modillion cornices and friezes and fielded panelled
wainscotting. Stairwell has panelled ceiling with central
wreath. Cantilever oak stair with turned corner post and
square newel, with turned balusters and moulded handrail.
Wooden chimneypiece c1900, with round head containing coat of
arms, and twist columns.
Library, remodelled in Gothick style c1820, has heavily
enriched modillion cornice and hexagonal panelled ceiling with
central star. Bookcases, doorcases and window surrounds have
Gothick detailing. Classical inlaid marble fireplace with
Gothick cast-iron grate and traceried surround.
Drawing room, to south, has heavily enriched frieze with
figure panels separated by paired modillions, and palmette
band. Coved ceiling with Rococo ornament and central panel
with guilloche surround. Bow window has window surrounds in
the form of palm fronds rising from fluted columns, and
enriched panels to the shutters. 4 enriched doorcases with
cornices and crests. Inlaid marble fireplace with long fluted
brackets to cornice and shell-back register grate.
Dining room, to north, is of similar design, with an oval dome
with fan in the bay window and Greek Key border to the central
ceiling panel. 3 round-arched windows with moulded wood
surrounds, panelled shutters and window seats. 4 fielded
6-panel doors with elaborate carved doorcases with cornices.
Marble fireplace with eared architrave and entablature. Ground
floor central corridor has a door surround with fanlight. Rear
ground floor office has resited full height framed panelling
and fragments of balustrade. Late C19 ashlar fireplace with
long scroll brackets. Dairy, at east end, has yellow glazed
brick walls with a band of leaves in same material. Brick and
stone shelves on all sides.
On the first floor, 2 front bedrooms with full-height
panelling, elaborate cornices and simple marble fireplaces.
Fielded 6-panel doors. Right bedroom divided to form dressing
room. Bedroom above drawing room has full-height panelling,
frieze and modillion cornice. Carved marble fireplace with
cornice and overmantel with eared and shouldered architrave,
flanked by single 6-panel doors. Bedroom above dining room has
dentillated cornice and marble fireplace with eared architrave
and scrolled frieze. C18 cantilever dogleg rear stair has vase
and stem balusters and ramped handrail. Various fielded
6-panel doors.
The decoration in the style of Chambers may be by Thomas
Atkinson or by an unknown architect following designs from
Chambers' "Civil Architecture".
Outside, to north, a summerhouse, brick with concrete tile
roof, set in a brick garden wall approx 2m high and 35m long
and containing a segment-headed gate. Summerhouse has
concave-sided stone coped gables with flat tops and to west, a
central board door flanked by single windows, all with
segmental heads. Adjoining wall, to west, approx 45m long, has
slab coping. Opposite the house, a lower section topped with
wrought-iron railings and defined by square panelled ashlar
piers. To north, a further section approx 50m long, with an
intermediate wooden gate.
