SOUTH ELMHAM, ST. MARGARET ST. MARGARET'S GREEN
TM 38 SW 4/74 Rookery Farmhouse
1.9.53
- II* Farmhouse. Late C15 core, with C16 and C17 additions. 2 storeys and attics;
L-shaped form. Timber-framed and rendered; black glazed pantiles. An
internal chimney-stack to each range, one with square shafts rebuilt in the
C18, on older moulded bases. The main front (facing west) has 3-light
casement windows with transomes, some old, with square leaded panes, and 2 C20
replacements on the ground floor. The upper windows are not all on the same
level, and the front range not all of one date. Entrance door with 6 flush
panels, the top 2 glazed, panelled pilasters, and triangular pediment with
dentils. On the upper floor of the south side 2 high C18 3-light diamond-
mullioned windows with transomes and pintle hinges. A 2-bay C15 open hall,
formerly with queen-post roof, is encased in the east-west range: the smoke-
blackened cambered tie-beam and heavy arched braces of the open truss remain,
with mortices in the tie-beam for queen-posts, but the walls were raised,
probably in the C18, and to the east of the hall there is a C19 extension or
replacement in brick, colour-washed externally. The C16 ceiling inserted into
the hall has a main beam with 6" chamfer and leaf-stops. A late C16 chimney-
stack and parlour were added to the west of the hall: plain ceiling, with
stepped stops to timbers, open fireplace with plain timber lintel. In the
room above the parlour, a fireplace with a fine bolection-moulded surround. A
C17 extension on the north side of the parlour resulted in the present 3-cell
north-south range, which has, extending on its north side, a gabled 2-storey
stair wing, with the wallplates projecting at eaves' level supported by ornate
Jacobean brackets, while the ground floor has a complete 5-light ovolo-moulded
mullioned window. The fine stair with turned balusters within this wing,
although of the same date, appears to have come from another building, as it
blocks the original window and was intended for a different alignment.
