Assembly Rooms, Masonic Temple and public hall. Assembly Rooms
1814; Masonic Lodge 1858-59; Milton Rooms c1930.
The Assembly Rooms: cream brick in Flemish bond at front, on
painted stone plinth, with painted stone dressings and
doorcase; rear and sides of pink and cream mottled brick;
hipped slate roof with truncated brick stack at rear.
2-storey 5-window front. Central double doors of
raised-and-fielded panels, approached by 3 steps, recessed in
architrave with moulded cornice hood on grooved consoles.
Flanking windows are 12-pane sashes, over painted stone panels
sunk in raised surrounds which incorporate the sill. Tall
15-pane sashes on first floor, over similar sunk panels. All
windows have flat arches of gauged brick. Raised first-floor
band, and moulded band beneath projecting eaves. Above
first-floor windows is a long painted panel inscribed in low
relief: SUBSCRIPTION ROOMS. ANNO 1814.
INTERIOR: ground floor: 6-panel doors to rooms flanking
entrance hall; incised panelled reveals to stairhall arch;
moulded cornice to entrance and stair halls. Dogleg staircase
with open-string stone stairs; cast-iron angular balusters
with moulded handrail, wreathed at foot. Stair hall has
blocked rosette light in moulded surround, partly cut by later
inserted walls.
First floor: Assembly Room occupies full width of first floor,
entered by 3-leaf folding door of raised-and-fielded panels,
in incised panelled reveal. Door and window architraves
incorporate roundels in the mouldings, and lions' heads in the
angles. Window reveals are splayed and panelled, beneath
pediments with anthemion enrichment. Moulded skirting, dado
rail, hanging rail and cornice; hanging rail enriched with
guttae, cornice with lions' heads.
The Milton Rooms: orange-red brick in English bond on ashlar
plinth, with ashlar raised and chamfered quoins and dressings;
pantile roof. 2-storey and attic gabled front; 3 full centre
bays between flanking half bays, centre bays quoined and
breaking forward.
Central 1-storey portico, of 3 flat arches on square-section
piers with imposts, beneath modillion cornice and balustraded
parapet. Within portico, 3 pairs of panelled double doors in
chamfered architraves, with full width impost band.
3 tall windows grouped in centre of first floor, in raised
surrounds, the centre one keyed, with margin-glazed lights in
metal frames. Centre window incorporates glazed double doors
opening on to balcony formed by portico roof. Balcony parapet
has bulbous balusters interrupted by square piers, the corner
ones supporting spherical light fittings on tall pedestals.
Eaves band, mutule cornice and shallow parapet cross centre
bays, the cornice returning at each end as raised eaves band
across flanking half bays. Lozenge-shaped light with crossed
glazing bars in coped gable end.
Left and right returns: 6 full height margin-glazed windows in
metal frames beneath flat arches of gauged brick.
INTERIOR. Interior fittings survive complete. A staircase at
each end of foyer rises from basement to balcony above end of
hall: open-string stone stairs cantilevered around well, with
wrought-iron balustrade of anthemion panels, and serpentine
moulded handrail. Margin-glazed inner double doors in panelled
reveals lead to hall. Hall has rectangular fasciated
proscenium arch to stage, tapered half-lantern wall lights and
coffered ceiling with diamond lattice vents.
Masonic Temple at rear of the Assembly Rooms and beneath stage
of the Milton Rooms not inspected.
