GV II

Terraced houses. 1833-35. Yellow brick set in Flemish bond, painted in some places and stuccoed in others, dressings of stucco, roof of asbestos slates where visible. Two storeys over basement with some dormers in attic; three windows each except nos 21, 21A and 28 which have two windows. The common design for the houses has an entrance in the middle bay; on nos 18-20 and 26-7 the two outer bays come forward; on nos 23-5 only one outer bay comes forward; segmental-arched entrance in stuccoed bay with panelled pilasters, cornice, fanlight and panelled door of original design; one ground-floor window tripartite and flat-arched and set under an elliptical arch of gauged brick, the tympanum plastered and decorated with a wreath; the other ground-floor window flat-arched with a gauged brick head; stuco sill band to first-floor windows which the repeat the ground-floor arrangement, with a flat-arched window in the middle; sashes of original design throughout; stucco cornice and blocking course; stacks to party walls. Features of individual houses are: nos 18 and 19 have Doric porches distyle in antis and decorative glazing to the fanlights; no 19 lacks sashes of original design and has an ornate cast-iron window-guard to the ground-floor right-hand window; no 20 has elliptical-arched windows to both outer bays, sashes of original design to left-hand first-floor window only and a flat-arched dormer; no 21 has lost its left-hand bay to no 21A, which has a carriage- or workshop entrance to the ground floor, two replacement windows above, and a storey added in a mansard roof; no 23 has recessed part stuccoed, lacks sashes of original design to right-hand, first-floor window and has a storey added in a mansard roof; no 25 has recessed part stuccoed, lacks sashes of original design to right-hand ground-floor window and has a dormer in attic; no 26 has painted brickwork on the ground floor and sashes of original design only to the left-hand first-floor windows; no 27 has an enclosed stucco porch with Doric antae, mutule cornice, round-arched side windows and double doors of original design, lacks sashes of original design, and has segmental-arched windows in left-hand bay. Cast-iron railings to area of nos 18-21, 25-26; no 19 also has ornate standards with anthemion ornament. (Historians' file, English Heritage London Division).
