Shown on OS as CoE School. Church of England chapel of ease to Church of St Michael (qv), Bishopwearmouth; later infants' school, then library, now rent office. 1826-7; change of use to school c1870; library by 1984. Limestone rubble with ashlar dressings; roof of graduated thick grey slates with ashlar bellcote and copings. EXTERIOR: one high storey, 2 windows and lower one-storey, one-window porch with lower rear extension. Porch at left has plain stone lintel and alternate block jambs to boarded double doors and overlight with glazing bars. Rusticated quoins to porch and to main block which has 2 wide renewed mullion and transom windows with glazing bars in fixed lights, and surrounds similar to that of door. Stone copings on all gables; W rusticated ashlar bellcote on plinth, with voussoirs to bell arch, has cornice and blocking course. Porch left return has dripmould over mullioned and transomed pointed-arched window; similar window in porch rear extension. INTERIOR, partly inspected, shows wide inner architrave to door from porch to inquiries counter, and some dado panelling in lobby to counter. Ceased use as chapel when new Church of St Paul opened (qv).
