GV II
House, now school. Mid C19. Horizontally-tooled ashlar with ashlar plinth and dressings; roof graduated Lakeland slate with ashlar chimneys and cast-iron crestings. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and basement, 3x3 windows. Central porch has angle pilasters and cornice; half-glazed door, overlight and sidelights, and two windows in returns, all with glazing bars and panelled aprons. Sashes with glazing bars on both floors have shaped aprons to projecting stone sills; and rusticated voussoirs, the central larger. Basement light at right only. Giant pilasters at corners and framing central bay on left return are linked by floor string and wide eaves cornice with dentils and modillions. Hipped roof has side consoles to 2 front dormers with hipped roofs and slate-hung sides, and one similar dormer on returns; tall corniced ashlar chimneys at right end and at left of ridge have tapered square yellow pots; ornate ridge cresting. INTERIOR shows C18 style dogleg stair of 4 flights with decorated tread ends, grip handrail wreathed at foot, carved turned baulsters, and moulded dado. Fire screens inserted on landings. 6-panelled doors in architraves; strapwork ceiling in left rear ground-floor room.
